October 22, 2011 was a day that showed many of us the importance of hope, love, and friendship. On that day we tragically lost Gina Giancola--a friend, a teammate, a sister, a daughter, a young woman to whom many looked up to. For one year, Gina had fought mightily against the depression that was overtaking her, and despite her will to live and the love of her family and friends, the depression became too much.
While we cannot change the past, we can try to instill hope in those who feel the way Gina did. For this purpose, the Gina Giancola SAFE Foundation, a 501(c) 3 charitable organization, was formed. The nonprofit foundation is committed to educating young adults to reach out to others for help in times of despair. Our message is simple and powerful: You are not alone, and you are loved more than you know.
Gina was a true friend. Vibrant and kind, she lit up every room she entered. Let us perpetuate Gina's “light” and shine it on those in need.
